He went on to earn his master's degree in mathematics from the University of California, Berkeley in 1977, and his doctorate in mathematics from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1981. Schovanec has held various positions in academia, including professor of mathematics at the University of Texas at Austin, professor of mathematics at the University of California, Los Angeles, and professor of mathematics at the University of California, San Diego. He was appointed president of Texas Tech University in 2016. Schovanec is married to his wife, Mary, and has two children. He is an avid runner and enjoys reading and traveling. He is also a member of the American Mathematical Society and the Mathematical Association of America.
